This Herzberg motivation theory definition, also called motivational hygiene theory or dual factor theory, was written in 1959 by Frederick Herzberg. This American psychologist, who was very interested in people’s motivation and job satisfaction, suggested the theory. Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory 3 Herzberg published the two-factor theory of work motivation in 1959. The theory was highly controversial at the time it was published, claims to be the most replicated study in this area, and provided the foundation for numerous other theories and frameworks in human resource development (Herzberg, 1987).

Herzberg's theory states that, while negative hygiene factors (such as low pay, poor working conditions or lack of job security) cause job dissatisfaction, positive hygiene factors (such as status, good ergonomics and worker-friendly policies) simply satisfy basic employee needs, causing "movement," in the sense of work flow, but exerting no effect whatsoever on motivation. Herzberg’s Theory is based on an extensive survey of motivational factors at work, and the theory is often used in the context of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The theory breaks down workplace needs into two categories: hygiene factors that determine the basic level of stability and job security and motivation factors that give employees a sense of satisfaction. What are the basic components of Herzberg’s motivator-hygiene theory?

In 1959, Frederick Herzberg, a behavioural scientist proposed a two-factor theory or the motivator-hygiene theory. According to Herzberg, there are some job factors that result in satisfaction while there are other job factors that prevent dissatisfaction.

Herzberg’s two-factor theory is a psychological theory on motivation in the workplace developed by psychologist Frederick Herzberg in the 1960s.
